Solar Panels
Solar panels (also known as “PV panels”) are used to convert light from the sun, which is composed of particles of energy called “photons”, into electricity that can be used to power electrical loads. Solar panels are the most visible part of a solar system and are a surprisingly simple and reliable way to generate electricity.
Solar Storage Batteries
A solar battery is simply a battery charged with energy from solar panels. Batteries can buffer you from increasing energy costs so that you have power when you need it most.
The 3 main types of batteries
- Lead-acid batteries - Traditionally used for off-grid power systems
- Lithium-ion batteries - Now the most common type of battery and advancing rapidly
- Flow batteries - Generally used for larger energy storage applications and gradually evolving
Solar Inverters
Solar Inverters play a crucial role in any solar energy system and are often considered to be the brains of a project. An inverter’s basic function is to “invert” the direct current (DC) output into alternating current (AC).
Long lasting solar power systems require a high quality inverter with a robust convection cooling system.
There are also more advanced string inverter systems that use small power optimizers attached to the back of each solar panel. Much like micro inverters, power optimizers are able to monitor and control each panel individually and ensure every panel is operating at maximum efficiency under all conditions.
Charge Controllers
A solar charge controller, also known as a solar regulator, is essentially a solar battery charger connected between the solar panels and battery. Its job is to regulate the battery charging process and ensure the battery is charged correctly, or more importantly, not over-charged.
